THE TRILOGY OF GARDENS - PONTA DELGADA, AZORES - 2014
In a derelict zone of urban Ponta Delgada Azores with abandoned structures near a new hotel we were asked to rethink the link of the low rise urbanity with the marina and sea front of St. Michael island, pristine green jewel in mid atlantic ocean.
Recent memories of fecund readings emerged. A triptic of narratives took hold, on nature, water, philosophy:
1- Nokolai Gogol's description of a decaying ruin's garden merits on Dead Souls.
2- David Foster Wallace's suburban rotten hills around the recovery house in boston's Infinit Jest
3- Mythical renaissaince treatise on hedonistical gardens water structures Hipnerotomachia Poliphili
A diverse collection of endemic and introduced species of trees, plants, bushes furnishing a map of memories, smells, cultures and mental aproaches was the project:
Beech (endemic), heather (endemic) and some species traditionally used and in gardens and non-weeds such as Bergenia (Pink dragonfly), Persea indica, Metrosideros excelsa, Tilia, Gingko biloba among others. In pergolas climbing vines: Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Bouganvilea, or wisteria. The hot springs, tea, azaleas planted in the plantation areas next to the terraces and tanks and other framing areas and in association with herbaceous endemic or traditional use in S.Miguel \ Azores.
