HOUSE ON THEORY OF WINDS - LEIRIA, PORTUGAL - 2011
A plot of land, west of Leiria, is the end of a long channelled valley. The north wind hovers down upon the little wood onsite.
700 years ago, a Portuguese King ordered the massive plantation ofPine trees, now woods of Leiria, to prevent the total erosion by the wind of the poor lands.
200 years later the wood became boats and ships and vessels of the Portuguese discoveries around the oceans over the globe. The sailors carried maps with the 4 winds represented with faces of young angels blowing.
Jeff Wall work based on Hokusai painting "A sudden gush of wind", came to mind the moment we stepped on the land and the client mentioned the winds.
On site there’s a water line and two stone reservoirs. We channel water on three new ponds descending the natural platforms. Then the wind and light can revolve over the carved shelter, along the everchanging skies.
